Weaving is an ancient craft that transforms loose threads into beautiful, unique textile creations. Imagine turning a simple collection of yarn into a colorful pattern, a warm scarf, or another artistic creation using just your hands and a loom. However, weaving is much more than just a technical skill. It’s a meditative and creative experience that allows you to experiment with color, pattern, and material.
In this workshop, you’ll get to do just that. You’ll work with colors and see how your ideas come to life, thread by thread.
A table loom, threaded with cheerful colors, will be ready for you. During the workshop, you’ll explore and experiment with colors and patterns. What happens when we blend colors evenly in the fabric? What if we use light or very dark colors? And what if we choose a different pattern? You’ll have the chance to try all of this.
This is a hands-on workshop where you’ll create your own unique piece to take home.
The Ambachtshuis Brabant is a leading educational organization specializing in practical training based on the master-apprentice model, where artisans serve as our masters. We strongly believe in this model, where learning by doing is central. Our doors are open to all (young) adults who want to work with their heads, hearts, and hands, regardless of their education, background, or skills. We offer everyone the opportunity to discover and further develop their passion for craftsmanship. Craftspeople are increasingly valued and in the spotlight! The demand for fair products and products with a story is growing. Through our training programs, we contribute significantly to this movement.

At Vakschool Schoonhoven, you discover the power of your craft—creating beautiful things and moments that enrich life. This requires craftsmanship and creativity, which is why we encourage you to develop your unique talents and seize opportunities.
Explore how you can bring your craft to life in your own way. As a goldsmith or silversmith, work on your own creations. As a jeweler, create special moments for others. As a watchmaker, fine-tune intricate techniques. You’ll discover all of this in an inspiring environment where you can be yourself. It’s no wonder we’ve been a renowned institution since 1895. We’d love to share more with you at the Ambacht in Beeld Festival!

After a brief explanation of the history of the poppy, you will create a flower from copper yourself. Using a hammer, you will work the provided copper petals on an anvil into graceful flower petals. The petals are then shaped on a hollowed-out plastic disc. The brass stem is threaded so that the petals can be attached to the stem.
In addition to iron/steel, several other metals can be used, such as copper, aluminum, bronze, and tin. Copper is a metal that we also work with in our forge. Copper is a relatively soft material that is easy to work with. We shape the copper by hammering it on an anvil and a plastic mold. Sometimes copper is heated to process it properly, but relatively thin copper can also be worked as is.
Having started as a freelancer in the metal industry, Cees Pronk conducted research on blacksmithing courses in the Netherlands in 1999/2000. However, a good vocational training no longer existed, which led him to develop a blacksmithing course himself. The end terms he wrote, approved by the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science (OCW), served as the basis for compiling and writing teaching materials for the Blacksmithing Course in Andelst and the establishment of Mondra Training. In addition to the Blacksmithing Course, various workshops and masterclasses are also offered for young and old, artists, and primary school students. All of this takes place at the Cornelis Pronk Forge, the place to gain knowledge about forging techniques.
As of January 1, 2024, Cornelis Pronk Forge has been handed over to his daughter Lotte Pronk, keeping the business in the family.

From a hard piece of metal, a seahorse is born through heat and force.
After a brief explanation from the blacksmith, you will forge a seahorse yourself. A provided strip of metal will be heated in the fire, and then you’ll hammer your very own seahorse on the anvil. This will be done with extensive guidance and example drawings from the blacksmith.

The leather pattern pieces for the make-up bag are cut out using a laser machine. You choose the leather and thread color you want to use. During the workshop, you will be introduced to hand stitching and learn various decorative stitches. After the workshop, you will leave with a hand-stitched makeup bag.
Since 1929, HMC has been an independent vocational school. As a relatively small school, we offer a personal and safe environment. We train students for careers in interior design, furniture, technology, and design. We offer programs for various professions including furniture maker, interior advisor, creative craftsman, home sales advisor, carpenter, upholsterer, and piano technician. We also provide courses and training for adults.

During this workshop, you will make your own wooden photo frame. It starts with choosing from three different types of wood. Then, we will create the frame using traditional methods with various machines and tools. You will learn to work with the miter press, band saw, and dovetail router. We will also make a Polaroid photo that can be immediately placed in the frame. At home, you can replace it with a photo of your choice!
Students from the Hout- en Meubileringscollege will enthusiastically guide you through this workshop. Most of them are enrolled in a woodworking program.

Furniture restoration is a refined craft that combines tradition and skill, breathing new life into old, worn furniture without losing its character and story. Each scratch and discoloration tells a story, and it is the art of the restorer to respect these stories while restoring the furniture to its former glory.
Restoring furniture requires in-depth knowledge of wood, veneer, and historical techniques, combined with a subtle sense of aesthetics. Restorers are masters at repairing damaged furniture. They repair woodwork with precision and patience, fill cracks, and renew old finishes.
With a love for the craft and an eye for detail, each piece is carefully dismantled, repaired, and reassembled. This process combines craftsmanship and creativity to preserve not only the beauty but also the soul of a piece of furniture.
Ruud Beerens is a professional furniture restorer at his workshop, Beerens Antiekrestauratie, in Gemert. With years of experience, he specializes in the restoration and conservation of veneered furniture from the 18th and 19th centuries. He also expertly restores wooden objects from all historical periods, from the early Middle Ages to the present, including sculptures, clock cases, mirror frames, ornaments, and antique tools.
Ruud is happy to provide an inside look into the world of furniture restoration on Sunday. He is a vocational teacher of furniture restoration at Het Ambachtshuis Brabant in Gemert.

Japanese Kumiko is a refined woodworking craft used to create shoji (room dividers). This traditional technique, practiced in Japan for centuries, requires great precision and craftsmanship. Each piece of wood is carefully cut and tailored to fit perfectly into the pattern, resulting in a seamless and sturdy construction. No glue or nails are used in the process. The patterns range from simple to extremely complex and often have symbolic meanings. Kumiko combines functional sturdiness with visual elegance and reflects the Japanese appreciation for craftsmanship, simplicity, and harmony with nature.
In the Japanese Kumiko workshop, you will learn the basic techniques of cutting and shaping wooden strips using Japanese tools. Precision is key to forming a beautiful geometric pattern, as no nails or glue are used. You will create your own small Kumiko panel, which can be finished with rice paper and is perfect as a decorative artwork for your home, a coaster, or a window hanger. All necessary materials and tools will be provided, and you can also order them to continue working on this refined technique at home.

Marquetry is an ancient woodcraft technique where very thin wood is cut, assembled, and glued onto a core wood. By using different types of wood with their natural colors, a unique image is quickly created. This refined work requires great craftsmanship and precision; each piece of veneer must fit perfectly to form a seamless whole. The result is a unique and decorative surface that highlights the natural beauty and variety of wood. This technique is applied in furniture, artwork, and interior elements, offering a special combination of visual refinement and artisanal skill.
In this workshop, you will learn how to combine different types of wood veneer to create beautiful, unique patterns. The thin wood is carefully cut and assembled into a composition designed by you, then it can be glued and finished.
