Kids: help build a tiny, tiny house

Under the guidance of an actual carpenter and his team, you can help build a tiny, tiny house. For small and older children: sawing wood, planing, drilling holes, driving in screws and hammering in nails. Super fun, even if you’ve never done it before, we’ll help you on your way!

Ruud Dubel is a furniture maker and fine woodworker in Amsterdam. He likes fun, crazy, challenging, simple and unexpected ideas, and he likes to supervise the creative building process during the festival.

Will you help build?

Young children must be under the supervision of parents/guardians.

Parents/guardians are responsible for their children at all times. The festival accepts no liability.

Build a small boat

Ibrahim is from Sudan and is a carpenter. He is very skilled in wood and worked in Sudan as a furniture maker, using recycled wood.

In these workshops, children of all ages can learn basic woodworking skills. You will build a small boat from wood and textiles, which will float in the water.

Make a toenail

The minimum age is 12 years.

Turn a square lath into an almost round stick that you can hammer into a piece of wood to lock a joint. You learn to plane with a hand plane and stab with a chisel. You will also learn about working posture while planning and how to adjust the planning chisel. We work with pine or larch. After the workshop, you will have your own toenail. The advanced woodworker can also pierce a worvel with a chisel. Of course, we will be happy to tell you more about the Technician Wood and Restoration course.

Technician Wood and Restoration is the only full-fledged MBO level 3 course to become a restoration carpenter. It is taught at 3 locations in the Netherlands: Hengelo, Arnhem and Zaandam. You will learn carpentry by hand, with machines and even with CNC-controlled machines during the 3-year course. So you can ‘get by’ in the machine shop and on-site. Restoring panelling and buildings is the core of the course. And you are also making new objects, with modern techniques.

Make a wooden picture frame

During this workshop, you will make your own wooden picture frame. It starts with choosing from three different types of wood. Then we will make a frame in the traditional way, using different machines and tools. You will learn to work with the mitre punch, band saw and dovetail milling machine. Then we will make a polaroid picture that can be placed in your frame! At home, of course, you can exchange it for a photo of your own choice.

Students from the Hout- en Meubileringscollege will enthusiastically guide you through this workshop. Most of them are studying woodworking.

The HMC (Hout- en Meubileringscollege) has been an independent intermediate vocational school since 1929. We are a relatively small school and this ensures a personal and safe atmosphere. We offer training for interior, furniture, technical and design professions. Among others, we offer courses for furniture maker, interior designer, creative craftsman, home salesman, carpenter, furniture upholsterer and piano technician. We also offer courses and training for adults.

Baptist

Baptist Arnhem has been offering high-quality tools and machines for woodworkers in the Netherlands and Belgium for almost 40 years. Its range of products is aimed at the furniture makers, wood carvers, wood turners, handyman and for schools, among others. A selection can be seen and bought during the festival.

Baptist Arnhem also has its own course workshop, where course centres from all over the country are invited to give introductory lessons in woodworking techniques, such as kumiko, fretsawing, woodcarving, furniture-making and pyrography.

During the Ambacht in Beeld Festival, Baptist itself will give small workshops! In about 15 minutes, you will go through various woodworking techniques such as measuring and marking, sawing, sanding and pyrography. You will make your own wooden gadget! A fun introduction to woodworking. This workshop is mainly for children. Parents can, of course, help! The workshops run throughout the day.

Baptist staff will be on hand to explain the tools and different techniques. There will be support for all four techniques.

Amsterdamsche Fijnhout

The Amsterdamsche Fijnhout is a family business that has been around since 1898. Starting out as a furniture workshop in the Jordaan district, the company has grown into one of the most specialised timber shops in the Netherlands.

During the Ambacht in Beeld Festival, a multitude of different types of wood will be on display and for sale at the Amsterdamsche Fijnhout stand—special pieces of wood with beautiful markings, grain and colour. You will find wood for carving, woodturning, pedestals, cutting boards and whatever else you have in mind. We are happy to think along with you and discuss a beautiful piece of wood! Besides wood, we also sell Japanese saws. These are pull saws and give a perfect fine cut; you are welcome to try one on our stand.

Sustainability
Wood is a renewable raw material, a natural resource that regrows (relatively) quickly. Of great importance here is that wood is produced sustainably. Slowly but surely, the importance of this is catching on in many parts of the world. The European timber law and a label like FSC help to be more sure of the origin of the wood, although there is still a lot of work to do. We are increasingly buying and promoting European wood species such as oak, ash and maple. Tropical species we prefer to buy with an FSC label and are always traceable to the source. We also purchase old batches of special wood so that we have a new supply without having to cut new wood.

Since 2021, we have been based in a new accommodation that has been set up to be as energy-neutral as possible. With the help of 300 solar panels, our sawmill runs on solar energy most of the year. Our forklift trucks are fully electric. We try to throw away as little wood as possible by selling the small pieces or giving them away as samples. We are also involved in a project by the Hogeschool van Amsterdam for processing residual wood into furniture by applying robot technology.

Make a bamboo zella

During this workshop, you will engage in sawing, filing, and sanding a solo instrument with a membrane made from bamboo. It produces a sound similar to a vuvuzela, yet it’s straightforward to play.

The workshop instructors are members of the Nederlandse Pijpersgilde, a bamboo flute association. The association operates under the traditional guild system, where you undergo internal training as an apprentice to advance to the journeyman level. The examination encompasses four components: AMV, construction, playing, and conducting/teaching.

Woodturning: make a wooden bowl

Learn to turn a wooden bowl up to 20cm in diameter on the lathe. In this workshop, you will get information on techniques and design.

Mark will bring two workbenches this year so two students can attend this workshop simultaneously. Last year, this workshop sold out within 10 minutes, so be quick if you want to get acquainted with the craft of woodturning.

RADIUS, the Dutch Association of Woodturners, was founded in 1994 and by now has grown to an association of 750 members. The association consists of 16 active regional sections.

A few members practise woodturning professionally, but most are active hobbyists. They turn their utilitarian and artistic objects at different levels according to their training, experience and interest. Several members enjoy great fame at home and abroad; their creations can be found at prominent exhibitions.

The association publishes a full-colour quarterly magazine called AktieRadius and holds an annual woodturning day at a central location in the Netherlands. This day features demonstrations, lectures, education and sales of woodturning supplies by various suppliers.

Carve letters in wood

Manual carving of text in wood. Nowadays, everything can be done with computers and milling machines. However, manual carving has many more possibilities, allowing you to be more creative with space and dimensions. It has a charm of its own.

We start the workshop with the basic principle of the letter I. Afterwards, you will make a letter of your choice, with straight lines, because round is still too difficult to cut. The letter can be carved into the wood. The other possibility is to cut away the wood around the letter so that the letter lies ‘on’ the wood.

Sculptor Rein Veldboer works mainly with wood. He makes large solid wooden sculptures. He also makes texts in wood and tries to play with the dimensions of letters. He has been teaching sculpting in wood for many years.
