Booklet with Japanese binding

A booklet, bound in a traditional Japanese way.

We utilize chiyogami paper to craft the cover of this booklet. Chiyogami originates from mulberry tree fibres, which are traditionally screen-printed in multiple runs to showcase exquisite colours and designs. Each sheet is individually screen-printed.

In Japanese binding, pages are consistently folded in a double manner, with the fold located at the front. This practice originated from using extremely thin paper, ensuring that text would not be visible through the pages.

Aaldert de Lange’s upbringing was steeped in a passion for books and bookbinding. By age 11, he was already assisting his parents in selling books at their antiquarian bookshop. Observing that his father’s book repairs using Bison sealant often hindered the books from opening, Aaldert began learning the art of bookbinding. In addition to conducting workshops and offering bookbinding materials and tools, he executes book repairs at the Bookbinding Centre in Echten.

Tanja Rakic has actively engaged in offering courses and workshops in the field of bookbinding for more than 20 years. Additionally, she enjoys arranging bookbinding-related events and trips, including organizing a workshop at Berne Abbey and participating in the Bookbinding Fair in Sint-Niklaas (Belgium).

Boektotaal is a bookbinding and restoration workshop located in the Bookbinding Centre in Echten (Dr.). Boektotaal specializes in giving various bookbinding-related workshops and courses (also on location), and sells everything in the field of manual bookbinding, such as various tools, decorative paper, folding legs, bookbinding glue, and linen for covering a book.

Print your own poster!

Printing your own poster with wooden letters? You can!

GWA Grafische Werkplaats Amsterdam is once again bringing a small printing press, antique wooden letters and ink to the Ambacht in Beeld Festival. With it, you can design and print your own personalised poster.

In its workshop just down the road in the NDSM Loods, GWA has an extensive collection of traditional graphic materials: printing presses, wooden letters, lead letters and everything you need for lino, woodcut and bookbinding. The foundation offers courses and workshops to anyone who wants to work with craft printing techniques themselves. School classes, graphics students, artists and lovers of handmade printing. Step away from the computer!

This workshop is for everyone aged eight years and up. You will work together with one other participant and make your own poster. The poster is not immediately dry; it is best to leave it hanging as long as possible before taking it home – or pick it up later at the Grafische Werkplaats Amsterdam.

Minhwa Korean Painting

Language: English.

Minhwa is a traditional folk painting style that beautifully captures Korea’s cultural heritage. Minhwa colourfully represents the perspectives, religions, symbols of daily life and desires, and folk mythologies of its time. It features robust animals as supernatural such as tigers, dragons, insects, and cranes, and colourful natural backgrounds with peonies, clouds, lotuses, water, or the sun. The unique symbolism blends Buddhism, Shamanism, Confucianism, and Taoism. Participants will pick one simple sample Minhwa and follow the instruction to finish one painting.

During the workshop, you’ll be privileged to paint on traditional Korean paper coated in lacquer. Our handcrafted brushes from Korea and China ensure an authentic and immersive painting experience.

Under the expert guidance of teacher Yeun, you’ll progress step by step, creating a high-quality painting and honing your skills in this cherished art form. The size of the painting will be A4 or A3.

Ebru art: paper marbling

Ebru art is an ancient painting technique that has been around for 1,500 years. In this technique, we paint on water. During the workshop, we will practice ebru art in the most traditional way, with water, paint and brushes, precisely as our ancestors did 1500 years ago.

Okan Akin is an artist born and raised in Turkey. He completed his art education in 1991, specialising in textile design. He worked for five years as a teacher at a vocational school in Turkey. In 1997, Okan moved to the Netherlands. In 2006, he decided to start his studio, Atelier Okan Akin, in Amsterdam, at the NDSM Loods. Here he still works full of enthusiasm and passion as an artist.

“I learnt traditional art techniques at an art academy in Turkey. Besides traditional art, I also studied modern art. My ultimate challenge is to apply and combine general art techniques in my contemporary work. Ebru art (paper marbling) is an example of this.”

Pop-ups basics

A pop-up book is something magical. Every time you turn a page, a three-dimensional and/or moving surprise appears. There are most spectacular pop-up books, hugely complex structures made of paper. But an exciting pop-up does not necessarily have to be complicated if you use the basic techniques cleverly and combine them!

In this workshop, Rianne will take you on an adventure into the world of pop-up books. For inspiration, you will be shown some of her favourite examples. Then you will create the magic yourself. You will learn some simple techniques that form the basics of pop-ups. With these, you will develop at least one design into your own pop-up card. More is, of course, allowed, whether or not bound together into a booklet. Finally, you will take home your sketches, plus a lot of inspiration and tips, so you can experiment further if you feel like it. And if you want to develop more skills during the festival, you can also take this workshop with Rianne.

Rianne van Duin is a Paper Adventurer and professional tinkerer. She invents and creates interactive 2D/3D worlds from paper. For children and with children (from 0-100 years old).

Rianne’s work ranges from illustrated pop-up books to life-size foldable theatre sets, from children’s newspapers to paper animation. Interaction is central to her creations. They stimulate the imagination and invite one to play, manipulate and experience them.

Rianne built her studio on the NDSM-Werf. From there, she works on commission for publishers, theatre productions and festivals, independently or in collaboration with (the work of) illustrators such as Fiep Westendorp and Leo Timmers. She also initiates personal projects such as Your Adventure, her independently published interactive children’s book, without batteries or electronics.

This workshop is for anyone who already has a little experience with pop-ups (e.g. if you attended the pop-up basic techniques workshop). Rianne shows a number of alternative book shapes, such as a carousel, star book and leporello, in which you can incorporate pop-up elements. You will choose a book shape and make your own pop-up mini-book, which you will take home afterwards, of course. Plus your sketches, inspiration and tips to continue experimenting at home.

Calligraffiti

Amsterdam-based artist Daan Wille, also known as Blazin, has mastered calligraffiti, a fusion of calligraphy and graffiti. Taking inspiration from the well-known graffiti artist Shoe, Daan is now an allround designer who creates logos, fonts and especially calligraphy.

In this workshop, you will closely examine Blazin at work and, with his help, create your own artwork with your name on it.

We first offered this workshop in 2015, collaborating with the Street Art Museum Amsterdam. Daan also gave workshops during Craft in Focus New York in 2017 and 2019. This year, due to success, again in Amsterdam!

Everyone can cut

Paper cutting is enjoyed by thousands of people worldwide. It is fun and relaxing, with which young and old create beautiful works of art: so many cutters and variations. The Dutch Society for Paper Art is the meeting place for leisure cutters and professional artists.

Paper cutting is included in the Inventory of the Dutch Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Everyone can get to work with scissors and paper. First, you will learn the basic techniques from experienced cutters. Then you apply them yourself and eventually go home with one or two cut pieces of art.

The workshop organisers are members of the Dutch Society for Paper Art who have been specially trained to teach interested parties the tricks of the trade. Most of them regularly exhibit their work.

Paper flowers

Elendrea Cachola (Rhea) of Tuindorp Deli-cious is happy to teach visitors from all ages how to make colorful paper flowers.

You can choose to make flowers of different seasons, like tulips, magnolias or a Christmas star. With the shaped flower stalk, they form a cheerful ensemble.

Filipina Rhea connects the four seasons with the life of a woman, and is eager to tell you more about her philosophy.
