Van der Linde Artists’ Materials

Van der Linde is a specialist in artists’ supplies and graphic studio materials and has been established since 1898. It operates both as a shop and a wholesaler for schools, creative centres, professional visual artists, hobbyists, and anyone with creative ambitions.

During the festival, Van der Linde presents a wide range of materials that connect to the workshops. Feeling inspired? Here you will find the materials to continue working at home with your newly learned skills.

Van der Linde will also host a demonstration during the festival with water-mixable oil paint, and for children a “make & take” activity with Posca markers.

Ambachtenbus

In order to share the love for creativity with children, the Ambachtenbus offers engaging workshops led by the enthusiastic Bram Korte.

Craftsmanship is becoming less visible in today’s society. By creating something themselves, children experience the joy of making and discover that it is not always as easy as it looks.

Giving children this experience aligns with one of the goals of Ambachtelijk Vakmanschap Nederland: to pass on the love for making and to place greater value on traditional craftsmanship.

The bus is equipped with hand tools, technical workstations, and reclaimed materials, allowing children aged 8 and up to get started under guidance.

Offered by platform Ambachtelijk Vakmanschap Nederland.

Ambachtelijk Vakmanschap Nederland

Ambachtelijk Vakmanschap Nederland is the leading platform connecting and representing craftspeople, vocational training programmes, and organisations. It is a network of professionals with a mission to strengthen the sector, improve the reputation and visibility of craftspeople, promote craft education, preserve and pass on specialist knowledge to a new generation, and highlight the sustainable and innovative aspects of craftsmanship. The AVN Foundation achieves this through advocacy, collaboration with relevant partners, and the organisation of various activities.

Visit the stand and learn more about the activities AVN organises for the sector, as well as the opportunities to join as a maker or supporter. By becoming a member, you contribute to these goals and become part of the network.

Weave a Network Together

‘Networking’ is often seen as a way to get ahead: meeting the right people and opening doors for yourself. In this workshop, we invite participants to rethink this idea through collective weaving. Together, we build an ever-growing woven structure, a network that symbolises connection. As the work evolves, an oberih takes shape, a Ukrainian word for a protective object. You will learn simple weaving techniques and work with a variety of textile materials. Everyone contributes to a collective artwork and experiences how individual actions come together to create a larger whole. The process will be documented in a time-lapse video, making the growth of the work visible.

Collect4Ukraine is an Amsterdam-based grassroots network that emerged in 2022 as a direct response to Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine. A group of friends brought together art, academic expertise, and existing networks to support people and animals affected by the war. Collect4Ukraine sees art as something rooted in collective engagement; works are created through the participation of many, rather than by a single individual maker. Through workshops in drawing, weaving, sewing, and cooking, they connect displaced people and the wider Amsterdam community. These mediums require no training or shared language, serving as a form of embodied communication. In this way, they connect to long-standing traditions of collective, often women-led artistic production, in which textile work has served as both a survival strategy and a form of resistance.

Photo Exhibition: Working Hands

Since 2018, Herman van Doorn has been travelling to Venice to document Venetian crafts, artisans, their workshops, and their traditions. His years-long project has resulted in the publication of the book “VENEZIA | Traces of the Future”, featuring 150 portraits of people in their workplaces, surrounded by the spaces and tools of their craft.

In addition to these portraits, he also photographed the hands of many artisans at work. Not posed hands, but hands as the primary instrument of craftsmanship. During the Ambacht in Beeld Festival, a selection of these photographs will be exhibited.

HAB-TO Leather House

In the 19th century, leather hides were often discarded as a byproduct due to cultural norms and hygienic concerns. The ancestors of HAB-TO Leather House‘s founders recognized the importance of not wasting these natural resources in the mid-19th century. They began collecting, salting, preserving, and tanning hides, building a large network in Western and Eastern Europe.

While HAB-TO Leather House requires sustainability certifications from suppliers, they believe that true sustainability goes beyond a piece of paper. It revolves around a deep understanding of the entire supply chain. Their core value and cornerstone is the exclusive use of vegetable-tanned leather.

During the festival, HAB-TO Leather House will give presentations about their unique OLIVE LEATHER product, and they sell supplies and tools for leather workers and hobbyists.

Make a wooden toy car

Ibrahim is from Sudan and is a carpenter. He is very skilled with wood and worked in Sudan as a furniture maker, using recycled wood.

In this workshop, children of all ages can learn basic woodworking skills. You will build a wooden toy car that can actually drive.

The Right Side Light

In the series “The Right Side Light”, artist Michalina Małolepsza portrayed people from her immediate surroundings, striving to create work imbued with universal symbolism. This is not only about the likeness of the depicted person, but primarily about capturing the atmosphere and preserving the moment.

Her favorite graphic technique, linocut, played a crucial role in this process. In this technique, an image or pattern is carved into linoleum with a gouge and then transferred to the surface with printing ink. The plate used for printing must be created in mirror image.

In this project, Małolepsza explored the unique qualities of linocut: the mirror image as part of the creative process and the direct, artisanal way of working. The technique forced her to think and design differently, ultimately leading to the development of her own recognizable visual language.

Michalina Małolepsza lives and works in Schiedam, the Netherlands. In 2011, she graduated from the Willem de Kooning Academy of Arts in Rotterdam, where she further developed her passion for art and creativity. During her studies, she decided to specialize in traditional printmaking, with a particular focus on the linocut technique. This technique enables her to bring her artistic vision to life in a unique way. The artist enjoys exploring various themes, and her work is characterized by an interest in humanity.

Michalina is a member of Grafisch Atelier Minnigh in Rotterdam and Stichting KunstWerkt in Schiedam, where she collaborates with other artists and continues to refine her skills. She participates in various art projects in Rotterdam, Schiedam and the surrounding area. Her works have been exhibited in many places throughout the Netherlands, as well as in the United States and Poland.
